Flood Impacted Schools Update - 12 October 2022
As with many other community organisations, businesses and residents in the flood impacted regions of the Far North Coast, whether or not our properties can be insured is a big consideration in making decisions about our future. Our understanding of this matter is not yet clear. Very initial advice from the insurer notes that some schools that suffered significant damage during the floods may potentially be uninsurable (in whole or part).
At this stage, these schools include:
- Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Primary, South Lismore
- St Joseph's Catholic Primary, Woodburn
- St Joseph's Catholic Primary, South Murwillumbah
In response to this initial advice, the Bishop of Lismore’s School Review Commission is seeking further information from the insurer. Our Lady Help of Christians, South Lismore and St Joseph's Primary, Woodburn are currently operating at temporary locations while St Joseph's Primary, South Murwillumbah, has returned to Wardrop St and remains open for all students.
We recognise that our school communities are looking for certainty and we continue to work closely with the School Review Commission towards this.
Whatever the outcome of the review, we want to reassure all in our communities that Catholic education will continue to have a strong presence across the Diocese of Lismore and every child wishing to have a Catholic education will be able to access a Catholic school.
In the near future, all families and staff of our flood impacted school communities will have the opportunity to participate in the consultation process with the School Review Commission where you will be able to share your view on the future plans for our schools.
Thank you for your ongoing support of our school communities.
