All teachers are now classified in one of three ways:
EXISTING TEACHER
A person with a recognised teacher education qualification or subject content degree who has been employed as a teacher in NSW before 1st October 2004
NEW SCHEME TEACHER
A person who is employed as a teacher for the first time after 1st October 2004 OR a person returning to teaching after an absence of five years or more (NB: Most will have a teaching degree but some may not. This affects the type of Accreditation offered).
TRANSITION SCHEME TEACHER
A person without a recognised teaching qualification or a subject content degree who has been employed as a teacher before October 2004 (NB: These are unqualified teachers employed prior to 1st October 2004.)
The Institute accredits teachers through the Teacher Accreditation Authority (the Lismore CEO). New Scheme Teachers and Transition Scheme Teachers must be accredited in one of two ways:
PROVISIONAL ACCREDITATION
Applies most often to New Scheme Teachers who are working towards their Professional Competence level. These teachers have 3 years to reach Professional Competence.
CONDITIONAL ACCREDITATION
Applies to Transition Scheme Teachers who are working towards obtaining a teaching degree. While working towards this degree they must be under the on-site supervision of a qualified teacher.
A New Scheme Teacher may also receive Conditional Accreditation if they do not meet the requirements of Provisional Accreditation (that is they do not have a teaching degree).
