Across Australia all education systems engage with the Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL). This is the peal authority for teacher development. Visit www.aitsl.edu.au for further information.
Teachers share a special responsibility in preparing young people to lead successful and productive lives. The National Professional Standards for Teachers reflect and build on national and international evidence that a teacher’s effectiveness has a powerful impact on students, with a broad consensus that teacher quality is the single-most important in-school factor influencing student achievement. Effective teachers can be a source of inspiration and, equally importantly, provide a dependable and consistent influence on young people as they make choices about further education, work and life.
Amongst other documents AITSL has developed a Principal and Teacher Standards Framework and a Teacher Performance and Development Framework. Teacher Standards provide the Diocese with an ideal opportunity to encourage teachers to fully develop in their chosen profession. For the first time we have a uniform set of standards Australia wide. This will benefit our teachers in many ways. They are a set of Standards that provide a benchmark to define the knowledge and skill levels required of teachers throughout their career. They present a common understanding and language for professional discussions between teachers, principals, teacher educators, professional associations and the public. The Standards are an important aspect to our work with teachers.
